In Memoriam: Vytautas Pliura
With great sadness, Lamp announces the passing of Vytautas Pliura, a talented poet and artist with the Lamp Art Project who died on March 30, leaving behind an amazing creative legacy.
Vytautas was with Lamp Art Project for more than 10 years, and specialized in painting landscapes and scenes inspired by memories from his childhood on a central Illinois farm where he grew up raising angus cattle, corn and soybeans. He moved to Los Angeles in 1973 and earned a bachelors degree in fine arts, specializing in motion picture production, at UCLA.
A published poet who regularly held readings in the Los Angeles area, Vytautas loved to talk about his drawings, describing them in beautiful detail. “Making art gives me a relief that I can’t find anywhere else,” he said. “It’s like a steam valve that allows me to let the pressure out of the pressure cooker.”
Vytautas made an indelible impact with his images, his words and his presence. He will be dearly missed.
